SCULPTURALS
Artist statement about sculptural textile work:
One of the most amazing things for me about felting is the possibility to create volume without any sewing. Once interleaved layers of wool fibers get felted through hand rubbing with hot soapy water around a resistant, it’s possible to sculpt and mold the resulting fabric like clay. By working with a multitude of wool layers it’s possible to create a very strong material, resistant and self-standing.
With my three-dimensional work I explore the possibilities of functional art sculptures. Instead of ranging a hat somewhere, my head sculptures are beautiful and intriguing objects, perfect to be exposed as an example of contemporary textile art on a wall or shelf. They are probably even more object than accessories as they are very expressive and artsy - only very extravagant people are willing to wear them. In France, art can’t have a function. I’m inquiring this notion by doing sculptures which may decorate a head but which are so excessive that nearly no one would wear them: “sculptures one may put on a head but nobody does, does it make it art again?”
It’s the same with my sculptural neckpieces and bags. Thought and worked out like sculptures, they are perfect for home decoration but also stunning one of a kind accessories for a unique person.
Like my whole work, my textile sculptures are made to surprise, make smile and laugh. There is nothing more rewarding than listing to the surprised laughter when people discover that my sculptures can be worn. I love to see their imagination go wild when they start playing with my work.
I’m also doing sculptures without function. These are often inspired by my two dimensional fiber paintings and always invites to play. Representing weird characters, between animal and human, these hybrids often have flexible parts or can be transformed. I love to organize them in playful scenes and dream of creating a story or a slow motion animation with them one day…
